It's not one of the Bemis toilet seats, bidet toilet seats, electric toilet seats or even one of the Ginsey toilet seats. This is a toilet seat designed by God!

Seems a Las Vegas woman saw a sign from the heavens when she felt the urge to go. Magdalena Nelson's guest bathroom is decorated with a "I love Las Vegas" theme. However Magdalena claims she saw an image of Jesus on her toilet seat lid's bumper sticker.

Others, including her boyfriend say they have seen the divine image and it's given them a positive feeling after they had recently suffered some financial setbacks. Nelson says she's even willing to let visitors come see it because it might help them as well.

She has even offered to sell the entire toilet, bowl and all! Watch this unique toilet seat video below and see if you can see Jesus on this toilet seat.

Unique Toilet Seats of a Bygone Era

As you look at all the unique toilet seats on these pages did you ever wonder what toilet seats were like a 150 years ago? Folks back then didn't have a wide selection of colored toilet seats to choose from.

However, many people did have toilets in their homes even if they did not enjoy central plumbing. Yes the outhouse was very common but also available was the indoor commode.

One fancy toilet seat available back then was a bureau and commode combined. It was one of the top toilet seats and not everyone could afford it. Here's how it was described at the time.

Combined Bureau and Commode.—This invention; consists H combining, in one and the same piece of furniture, a bureau and commode, the commode being so arranged, with regard to the bureau, that it can be moved out and in at pleasure, according as it is desired or not to use it—the commode, when not in use, being wholly encased within the bureau. By this combination a very neat, simple and compact piece of furniture is obtained; and in addition to a bureau and commode, other necessary articles, used for similar purposes to the commode, are also arranged in connection with it; the whole presenting a most convenient and desirable piece of furniture, worthy the examination of furniture manufacturers. George W. Koch, of No. 150 Wooster street, New York, is the inventor.

Imagine having that top designer toilet seat in your home! Let me take you back in time to discover how folks arranged their bathrooms 150 years ago.

Here's Nelly Browne describing how she set up a sick room, including a unique toilet, for an ailing relative.

In order to have our invalid in a large, sunny room, it became necessary to move her and her belongings into a room that had no closet. In an ordinary sleeping-room the lack of a closet seems the lack of the one thing needful, but in a sick-room a closet seems indispensable. Especially is it so when the nurse is a sister or daughter who, in addition to the care of the invalid, has also the general care of the household, and does with her own hands the greater part of the housework. Then the saving of steps becomes a matter that must be planned for, and articles that are used daily in the sick-room must, as far as is possible, be kept in the room or near at hand. It was suggested to us that a closet might be improvised by throwing a cretonne curtain across one corner of the room; but to this our invalid rather objected, having an unconquerable dislike to what she calls "calico furniture." She begged for a reprieve of a day or two, believing she could plan something that would do away with such a necessity. And this is what she finally planned, and what we, under her directions, carried into execution :

The headboard of the bedstead was very high, its center reaching nearly to the top of the room, and its lowest corners being high enough to conceal a person standing behind it. Into a narrow strip of wood, three-fourths of an inch thick, and as long as the width of the bedstead, we screwed twelve small hat hooks, and then screwed the strip to the back of the headboard, about four feet from the floor. The bedstead was then placed so that its head stood across a corner of the room, and there was a closet! Wrapper, flannel skirt, dressing sack, bed-shoes, etc., were hung on the hooks,—out of sight but within easy reach.

The bedstead being very wide, the triangular space it cut off was found to be large enough to admit a narrow table ; so a table was placed across the corner, parallel with the headboard. On one end of it, to-day, an earthen tile—one of those so prettily used as teapot-stands—and a small tray hold medicine bottles, glasses, teaspoons, and water pitcher. On the other end are piled the extra blanket and pillows used when the invalid is propped up in bed. The bedstead corners are not close to the wall; on that side of the bed least exposed to the room space is left between wall and bed-post for a door-way to the closet.

Next we turned our attention to the commode. We built a narrow shelf across its back, not too far from the top to be reached easily, and devoted it to hair-brush, tooth-brush, etc., our invalid having a notion that such articles ought never to be shut away from the air, in box or drawer. No amount of care, no degree of neatness, is sufficient to keep them quite sweet when thus shut away.

When the commode was rolled into position across a corner, there was room behind it for the slop-jar,—an article always too suggestive of homely uses to be strictly ornamental. The commode had one drawer, and below the drawer a closet perhaps fifteen inches high. We built a wide shelf across the upper part of this closet, and on this were soon arranged a row of two-ounce vials containing ammonia, carbolic acid, alcohol, spirits of camphor, rose water, and other like articles used in sick-rooms; boxes of vaseline, borax, mustard, etc., and last, but not least in importance, a flat wooden box in which " may be found at any time of day or night," hop bags ready for use, large pieces of flannel, and a good supply of' what our invalid calls " emergency rags," both linen and cotton.

To the inside of one of the commode doors we tacked a stout linen pocket to hold a brush-broom and a dusting-cloth; on the other door we hung a dust-pan.

The deep drawers of an old-fashioned bureau hold the invalid's wearing apparel and the sheets and pillow-cases used in this room; towels, handkerchiefs, and wash-cloths are kept in the commode drawer, and three table-drawers stand ready at all times to receive or to deliver up any one of a hundred little things too small to claim a special place of their own.

So our invalid is living very cozily in her room without a closet. Everything needed in taking care of the room has found a place in it, except a broom. To-day the Genius and Architect of the family suggests that the broom be hung on the twelfth hat hook, which suggestion we propose to carry out to-morrow morning.

How far we have come. Most modern homes have several complete bathrooms with very comfortable toilet seats. Many even come with elongated toilet seats and heated toilet seats. How Nelly would have marveled.

Toilet is More Than a Seat

The importance of the subjects of which this volume treats may be gathered from the following articles on toilet, unique toilet seats, their history and therefore need only be generally referred to here. That " cleanliness is next to godliness " has been long a household proverb ; and that many other duties connected with bathrooms and sanitary toilet seats are subordinate only to personal cleanliness will, I think, be readily admitted.

The choice and use of appropriate clothing, both as an ornamental and protective covering for the body, are also matters of equal importance. At the present day a due attention to the requirements, usages, and habits of society in these matters, as in others apparently more important , forms a portion of the common and necessary routine of daily life. Apart from health and comfort, to which I shall again allude, our social position, our welfare and advancement, often materially depend on these points, and are liable to be seriously implicated by their neglect. This certainly applies to fancy toilet seats.

" A pleasing appearance " is said to be " the first letter of recommendation,"—a simple truth, which it would be insulting the reader to attempt either to gainsay or to strengthen. Happily the Creator, in His wisdom, has not merely endowed man with an instinctive love of personal cleanliness, but has also implanted in his bosom a feeling of self-pride, or rather say, of self-respect, which, when controlled by reason and good taste, incites him to a laudable, but not an excessive attention to those duties and particulars which it is my desire to enforce and explain.

Besides those matters just referred to, there are others connected with our daily life, and the state in which we live, which demand the earnest attention of us all, since without it neither health nor beauty can be promoted, and even when existing, must rapidly decay. The complex structure of our bodies, and the various functions of the numerous organs on which both physical and mental life depend, are governed by certain laws, and require for their integrity and well being certain concomitant conditions that cannot be violated, nor even neglected, with impunity. Among these last, pure air, good and appropriate food, exercise, sleep, and some other matters, including unique toilet seats, noticed in the following articles, may be mentioned.

The necessity of attention to the above subjects being a point which I shall here assume as granted, the causes which lead to their neglect may claim a passing notice. These may be severally referred to absence or a low condition of the nobler moral feelings, to thoughtlessness, indolence, or ignorance, or to excessive vanity or vulgarity. Special unique toilet seats and toilet seat covers are no exception.

The errors of some persons in these matters may be traced to a degraded or a morbid indifference to their present condition and future welfare, or to absolute inability to appreciate pleasures and luxuries which do not yield immediate pecuniary advantage or sensual gratification; whilst those of others, and not a few, arise from the misdirection of the attention to points of minor importance and temporary display. The relations between the subjects referred to and health, and between health and personal beauty, as between cause and effect, are commonly forgotten. Selecting the best toilet seats for your bathroom addresses many of these issues.

Present convenience and present appearance are the deities on whose fatal altars the health and fair looks of after-life are commonly sacrificed by the multitude. " Familiarity breeds contempt" of duties, as it frequently does of men. The necessity of constant repetition and frequent attention, instead of leading to greater skill and care, has often a contrary effect. Of the truth of these remarks, there are thousands of living illustrations in every direction we may choose to seek them. Premature baldness, grey hair, pallid cheeks, haggard looks, bilious skin, hemorrhoids, baggy eyes that once were sparkling, produced neither by unavoidable disease nor by the original curse of man's disobedience, are now so common in our larger towns and cities as no longer to attract attention, or to provoke inquiry as to their cause. But should this be ? It would be useless to argue on the subject. The reader will, I trust, find an answer to the question in the facts recorded in the following pages. It has been affirmed, and I think correctly, that, from the relative attention paid in any country to cleanliness, the cosmetic arts, dress, and toilet seat hygiene, and from the respective prevalence, influence, and mutations of custom and fashion, may its claims to civilization, refinement, and luxury toilet seats be vindicated. Indeed, there appear to be abundant historical, as well as living data, in support of this opinion. They are national characteristics which are almost constantly associated together. We may thus, in general, safely infer the advancement of the last, from the known condition of the others. The disregard of these matters, and the rigid adherence to antique usages and forms, are, in like manner, certain indexes to a state of little progress, or of imbecility and barbarism. I shall avail myself of these facts in the " historical notice " that follows this article. And here a few remarks respecting certain words which form a leading portion of the " title" of this little volume may, probably, be interesting to some of my readers :—

The word " toilet" comes from a nearly similar word in the French language.* Originally it simply denoted the cloth or cover of a " dressing-table but, like many other words, it rapidly acquired a more extensive application. By a common figure of speech, it soon came to be employed as the name of the table itself, and subsequently as a general term expressive of the mode and various operations of dressing, including all matters immediately connected with personal cleanliness, arrangement, and cosmetic treatment. In the expression " to make one's toilet," it denotes the " careful or usual adjustment of the person, dress," &c. I realize most of you arrive on my unique toilet seats site looking for a special commode seat for your bathroom. I'm happy you're here and I'm sure you can find the unique toilet seat you're looking for because I offer only the highest quality toilet seats at the best prices (often with free shipping too!).

But why not have a little fun while you're shopping for that special toilet seat? That's why I wrote about our local Toilet Museum in my earlier article. Well, Barney Smith, an 86-year-old retired master plumber, is the Picasso of toilet seat color.

Barney has created over 700 colored toilet seat works of art. It all started more than 30 years ago. Barney is inspired to paint and engrave his toilet seats from personal experiences and places he has visited around the world.

Each work of art is numbered, photographed and cataloged. He only works with pressed wood toilet seats because the hard wood and plastic toilet seats don't lend themselves to engraving or painting.

If you're ever in the San Antonio, Texas area, be sure to drop by Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum. He even has a 15 minute video theater presentation showing his museum being covered by the national news outlets including the Today Show. For directions visit Roadside America. Ironically, the Toilet Seat Art Museum has no bathroom.

A Unique Toilet Seats Top Toilet Seats Museum?

Unique toilet seats and top toilet seats have always interested me. It's not as odd as you think when you consider that I grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, original home of the American Sanitary Plumbing Museum better know as the Toilet Museum. A couple of years ago the Toilet Museum moved down the road to Watertown, Massachusetts but I moved to Hopkinton, MA, so it's still close by.

The Toilet Museum was started by Charles Manoog, owner of a successful plumbing supply business in Worcester. Charles' son Russell and his wife Bettejane continued to run the museum until 2008, when they donated its plumbing artifacts to a Watertown concern.

Coincidentally, the Manoogs were our summertime neighbors in Hyannisport, so that's just another connection I have to the Toilet Museum. One of the Manoog kids was allergic to sea water so they built this huge swimming pool for her in their back yard. We all had loads of fun there.

No one appreciated a unique toilet seat as much as Russell Manoog.
